December, 1876

The following article appeared in the December, 1876 Harper's Monthly Magazine. It was authored by General Egbert L. Viele and is generally historically incorrect. The General's daughter, Kathlyne, was the worst critic of the piece. The writing is 120 years closer to the immigrant ancestor and is therefore presented as a picture of the Schaghticoke Mansion during that Centennial period. The article is very racist from a 1997 perspective, but was probably considered enlightened in 1876.
